Courtney Chu, Eco-Designer, Artist

CourtneyCourtney

Courtney Chu is one of the first influential trend-setters in the childrens fashion industry to bring forth the concept of upcycling. For over a decade, she has been collecting and repurposing forgotten materials and fabrics to turn them into items coveted and loved. Like other great artisans, she sews every piece herself to elevate the uniqueness and story behind each garment. She often incorporates original artwork to further distinguish each dress. Her children's line courtneycourtney, has been delighting children and parents alike through the sophistication of the silhouettes, while maintaining the innocence and stories of childhood. She collaborates on new pieces with other creatives all around the world from photographers to artists to make each piece even more unique.

What are recent inspirations for your creativity?

colors that don't 'go together' and mixing prints/patterns, giving children truly one-of-a-kind dresses for adventures.

What are projects you’re working on that excite you?

creating my own prints/patterns by silkscreening, the ability to take found fabrics I'm already using, to another level.

How do you stay motivated to accomplish so much?

I am not quite sure. It's something innate.

What city do you recommend exploring? Why?

NYC is always fun. I visited Osaka and Kyoto a few years ago and WOW everything makes sense. Logical, efficient and positive. Otherwise, I generally only like to go to places where I have a friend as a local tour guide. There's a reason why they're called 'tourist traps.' On a constant search to find inspiration, so love seeing things I would never expect.

Where and what are you doing when you’re drinking Hiya?

If I am drinking water, I am usually drinking Hiya. I dance four times a week so it's with me there to help me hydrate, throughout the day commuting, at my desk, in studio, and bedside.
